About Single Variety Series
Why does C9P produce a Single Variety series? What are the differences and advantages between Single Variety and other series?
Jacky Yan, deputy general manager of C9P, gave a detailed introduction.
The Single Variety series carries the expression of the terroir and conveys the terroir adaptability of a specific variety.
The Single Variety series and the other products series can complement each other's advantage. They not only guarantee the style and quality of the estate, but also highlight the terroir of the dominant varietal estate. The other ranges are multi-varietal blends. The Single Variety series style is maintained to ensure quality. At the same time, different grape varieties have their own strengths and weaknesses, and blending multiple grapes together can complement each other's strengths and weaknesses to produce wines with a richer and more balanced taste.
Petit Verdot is a late-ripening variety and one of the five classic blending varieties in the Bordeaux appellation. In the cooler Bordeaux regions, Petit Verdot often fails to ripen well. The high temperatures during the growing season, the long frost-free period and the large temperature difference between day and night at the end of ripening provide a unique advantage for Petit Verdot to ripen fully.

About the terroir of Petit Verdot
About the terroir of Petit Verdot, Sam Zhu, the chief viticulturist of C9P, gave the following feedback.
Q
Q1: What are the terroir characteristics of Petit Verdot plots?
A
etit Verdot is a late-ripening variety that has difficulty reaching maturity in cool climate regions, which can result in wines made with it that have some raw green aromas and a slightly bitter taste. In warmer climates, it is possible to produce a red wine that is structured, fruity and floral, with a very distinct personality and great potential for ageing.
More accumulated temperature and long frost-free periods during the growing season in the Laixi appellation provide an inherent advantage for the growth of Petit Verdot.
The grapes for the single-vineyard Petit Verdot are sourced from the Newland 4 plot, which has a sunny slope and a north-south orientation, allowing for more sunshine. It is also on high terrain, with good drainage and aeration to ensure the health of the vineyard. The soil is clay loamy, thick and fertile, rich in calcium carbonate and other minerals. It is very conducive to the growth and ripening of Petit Verdot and the development of a unique flavor profile.
Q
What special growing methods are used to grow this variety well?
A
For high germination rate and many water sprout of Petit Verdot: we do green pruning in three times to prevent nutrient wastage.
For poor uprightness of branches: we ensure the uprightness of branches by increasing the number of wires on the trellis system and tying them in time.
For high fruit setting: we achieve a balance of tree vigour and yield through green harvest, while ensuring the maturity and quality of each bunch of fruit.
Water supply on demand: excessive drought during the ripening period of Petit Verdot can lead to "stiff berries", which requires regular water and fertilizer management, and appropriate and timely watering and irrigation.
Q
At harvest, how did the 2020 vintage of Petit Verdot perform?
A
2020 is the third vintage of Petit Verdot and each vintage has given us enough surprises. The rainfall in 2020 was very good, with sunny weather and moderate drought during the ripening period. The health of Petit Verdot was very good. Petit Verdot reached a very good ripeness and the sugar-acid ratio was very well balanced.

About the Vinification of Petit Verdot
How to make a petit verdot that can express the terroir of Laixi Tingtao, by the C9P winemaker Emily Jin to reveal to us one by one.
Q
Why did you choose petit verdot to make Single Variety series?
A
Because of the excellent performance, we were amazed by the first vintage of Petit Verdot, which showed a lot of potential. Although 2018 was not released as a single variety, the professionals who tasted this wine and theC9P fans can't wait for the release of the single variety. The 2020 Petit Verdot is the third vintage harvested, with a slightly altered aroma compared to the previous year, a sense of spice, very strong herbal notes, great acidity, and long, fine tannins.
Q
Are there any special vinification methods used in the brewing process?
A
We use gravity vinification methods based on the winery's actual conditions, and we use stainless steel carts to manually fill the tanks. This reduces the involvement of the pump and ensures that the fruit flavors are not affected to the greatest extent possible.
By adjusting the degree of grape crushing and the frequency of the pumping cycle, the extraction of tannins can be well controlled.
After fermentation was completed all the wine was aged in oak barrels for 12 months. The proportion of new barrels was reduced in order to reduce excessive oak intervention and to highlight varietal characteristics.
Q
What are the characteristics of this wine?
A
Dark ruby color wine with purple nuances. Delicate floral notes, such as violet, lavender & pronounced scents of blackberries, gooseberries & raspberries, also with hints of dried herbs and black pepper. In the mouth, the wine delivers black fruits & floral fragrances, mocha notes & cedar when swirling. Full bodied wine with intense, structured layered tannins, while the acidity really fresh up & crisp the wine. The finish is marvelous, A seductive wine to enjoy through the time.
Q
What is the production? Why?
A
A total of 20,000 bottles were made in the year 2020. We not only used a single variety, but also ensured the concept of a single plot. Precision management and strict yield control were achieved, with production fluctuating slightly depending on vintage performance.
